What Is the Difference Between a Comic and a Graphic Novel?
Comics and graphic novels are often considered the same thing. While there are similarities there are also many differences.
- Comic books are generally shorter than graphic novels,
- Graphic novels cover a wide array of genres and subject matters. Comic books tend to cover smaller array genres and subject matters than graphic novels. Comics are usually associated with superheroes or “manipulated” characters.
- Graphic novels contain complete stories that may be part of a larger series,
- Comic book stories often spread across a series of books. This may require the reader to read them in sequence.
- Both comics and graphic novels can contain complex characters with detailed backstories and inner conflict.
- Comic books tend to be more commercial in nature and are produced with greater frequency, such as weekly or monthly.
